Ex-Broncos coach talks surprising dismissal, thinks Sean Payton ‘was in one of those moods’
Former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi shed light on his exit on Wednesday after he was let go following the AFC Championship loss. Lombardi, who had been with the Broncos for the past five seasons, spoke candidly about his departure in a press conference held at the team’s training facility.
As Lombardi took the podium, the room fell silent. All eyes were on him as he began to address the media. “I want to thank the Denver Broncos organization for the opportunity to serve as their offensive coordinator for the past five seasons,” Lombardi said, his voice filled with emotion. “I am grateful for the relationships I have built with the players, coaches, and staff during my time here.”
Lombardi’s exit from the Broncos came as a surprise to many, as he had been instrumental in the team’s success over the past few years. Under his guidance, the Broncos offense had ranked in the top five in the league in scoring and total yards in each of the past three seasons. However, the team’s struggles in the AFC Championship game ultimately led to his dismissal.
“I take full responsibility for our performance in the AFC Championship game,” Lombardi admitted. “As the offensive coordinator, it is my job to put our players in the best position to succeed, and I did not do that on that particular day. I understand the decision that was made, and I wish the Broncos nothing but success moving forward.”
Despite his departure, Lombardi expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with some of the best players in the league. “Coaching in the NFL is a privilege, and I am grateful for the chance to work with players like Peyton Manning, Demaryius Thomas, and Von Miller,” Lombardi said. “I have learned so much from them, and I will carry those lessons with me wherever I go next.”
As Lombardi fielded questions from the media, he was asked about his future plans. “I am not sure what the future holds for me at this point,” Lombardi admitted. “I plan to take some time to reflect on my time with the Broncos and evaluate my options moving forward. I am open to coaching opportunities at any level, and I am excited to see where this next chapter takes me.”
In the days following his departure, Lombardi received an outpouring of support from fans and colleagues alike. Former players took to social media to express their gratitude for his leadership and guidance, while fellow coaches reached out to offer their support during this difficult time.
As Lombardi packed up his office and said his final goodbyes to the Broncos organization, he reflected on the lessons he had learned during his time in Denver. “Coaching in the NFL is a challenging and rewarding experience,” Lombardi said. “I have grown so much as a coach and as a person during my time with the Broncos, and I will always be grateful for that.”
As Lombardi walked out of the Broncos training facility for the last time, he knew that his time in Denver had come to an end. However, he also knew that this was just the beginning of a new chapter in his coaching career. With his head held high and his heart full of gratitude, Lombardi looked ahead to the future with hope and optimism. The lessons he had learned in Denver would stay with him forever, guiding him on his journey to whatever came next. And as he drove away from the facility, Lombardi knew that he was ready for whatever challenges lay ahead, confident in his abilities and grateful for the opportunities that had brought him to this moment.
